Introduction to In-game Cheats

This section holds the button-combination cheats that were programmed into DKC. Fancy starting off with 50 lives? Want to listen to the game's music in a convenient playlist? Read on to learn how to perform these cheats, and more...

How to Enter Cheats:

The following cheat codes are to be entered at the SELECT A GAME screen before starting/loading your game file. Instead of choosing a game file, press Down until the Erase Game option is highlighted, and press 'B'.

When the Erase Game text is flashing, enter one of the codes below.

Note:

Erase Game will stop flashing during code entry.
Up/Down refers to the directional pad.
L/R refers to the top 'flipper' buttons.

When a code is successfully entered, you will hear monkey sounds.

Start With 50 Lives (BARRAL code)

With Erase Game flashing, press: B, A, R, R, A, L.

Now when you select a game, you'll start with 50 lives instead of five.

Music Test (DARBYDAY code)

With Erase Game flashing, press: Down, A, R, B, Y, Down, A, Y.

You can now skip through the game's soundtrack by pressing select.

Non-active player can take control (BADBUDDY code)

With Erase Game flashing, press: B, A, Down, B, Up, Down, Down, Y.

In Two player team mode, this code allows the non-active player to take control by pressing 'select' on their controller.

The DYDDY code

This one is listed separately, as it's performed at a different screen, and is uniquely useful. If you happen to get game over, DON'T PANIC! There is a way to return to where you got up to, even if you hadn't saved your progress. Just wait until you see Cranky with his old record player...

When you come to that scene, just press Down, Y, Down, Down, Y on your controller... Hey, that almost spells Diddy!

You will hear the sound of a bonus room opening, and next thing you know, you'll be whisked away to a secret cave where you can merrily go about collecting animal tokens and earning back those lives you lost.

When you've had enough token gathering, just press Start and then Select to return to where you left off when you got game over. Better still, you get to keep the lives you earned playing those animal bonus stages! That was too easy, wasn't it?

Note:

You can access that secret cave when you first see Cranky upon loading up Donkey Kong Country, but you will be unable to press Start/Select to leave... You will be stuck in the secret cave and animal bonus areas forever! Or you could press Reset.
